I’ve been browsing a lot of online portfolios lately. One thing I’ve noticed is that people spend a LOT OF TIME coming up with cute, techie, catchy, silly, introspective, commercial names for their personal websites and blog.
I used to believe this was important.
I’m about 95% convinced this is a huge waist of time and that a designer needs to stand by his, or her, name.
Why? Well, you most likely will never change your name. When people talk about your work … they user your name. Even working for a design studio as I do, projects are still referred to as “Johns”, or whoever is the lead designer on the job. When people talk about designers … they use their name … not their business name, or their cute website name.
I’m going to stick with my name. It’s been with me a long time, and it’s never let me down. It doesn’t get criticized, and doesn’t require any thought. It’s me … John McMullen.
If you’re ever wondering where you can get in touch with me, I’ll be here at johnmcmullen.net
(True, I was a little disappointed that johnmcmullen.com was taken … but that just proves my point.)
